If you are going to bake and cook, share it

So this is a different Christmas and we have to live with it. It’s not the end of the world and it will save us a bit of dosh, not splashing on a gigantic turkey, a bucketful of punch and presents for twenty people. I am the saddest for those who will be on their own having had their expectations to join family or friends dashed. Nothing worse than anticipation vanished in a puff of smoke.

But since we are programmed to celebrate at this time of year, the lucky ones in lower tiers who can, will. On a small scale, perhaps all the better for it. My Christmas recipes have plenty of choice, both big and small and if you are going to bake and cook, share it. Perhaps with neighbours who aren't going to travel any more, or the friend whose family live all elsewhere. You can’t have them round, but you can take a Stollen log round as a gift.

I have a few good new recipes this year and they are all suitable for gifting. Check out the Italian panpepato and spongata di natale, Swedish Lucia buns, German cinnamon star cookies and Caribbean black cake. And if you want to treat someone to an oven-ready Christmas dinner gift, here’s my recipe with full instructions.  It's what I'll be doing: preparing two Christmas dinners instead of one and delivering my takeaway Christmas to my daughter and son-in-law who'd otherwise be coming over.

In the next couple of days we can bash out quick meals, squid with chorizo or crispy tomato rice, baked Korean meatballs or prawn tacos. And then I hope we’ll have some cheer, or at least a restful few days. Or not give a stuff about Christmas and get along like it is not happening. Maybe for Easter…
