Best 10 savoury biscuits and crackers

Sweet biscuits are all very well with a cuppa, but how about savoury nibbles, to serve with a cheese board, a glass of wine or on their own if your sweet tooth has gone for a nap?

Cheese biscuits, straws, oatcakes and crackers are as easy to make at home as sweet biscuits. They are usually sugar free, and some types are actually very good for you, with high fibre content thanks to whole grains and seeds. Just have a look at my collection of 10 best savoury biscuit recipes.

Seed crackers

Crunchy seed crackers made with a mix of 7 seeds: they are gluten free and amazingly delicious. Great as a snack, broken over a salad for a topping or served on a cheese board.

Homemade oatcakes

I know, Nairns are hard to beat but these homemade ones come close! Great for a snack with an apple, low in sugar and easy to make: just stir all the ingredients together, spoon onto trays and bake.

Seeded oatcakes

Another oatcake recipe, even better! Seeded oatcakes with poppy and sesame seeds are wholesome and gut friendly. Oatmeal, boiling water and a little butter – the process takes you back to making mud cakes!

Olive and seaweed crackers

Something a little more indulgent now: very moreish savoury biscuits with Parmesan, olives and capers, seasoned with dried seaweed flakes and black pepper.

Oregano cheese straws

Time for cheese biscuits, probably the nicest of the lot! These are easy cheesy oregano straws from homemade shortcrust pastry. They are flaky, buttery and melting in a mouth. Everyone’s all-time best ever favourite snack.

Cheese and black pepper buttons

Another variety of cheese biscuits, cheese and black pepper buttons are easy and delightful savoury shortbreads. Crunchy and peppery, with a hint of garlic, these are quite addictive.

Blue cheese and oat biscuits

It’s not always about Cheddar, blue cheese biscuits can be just as delicious. These savoury cheese and oatmeal biscuits are easy to make and taste nicely different than the usual ones.

And now for my best cheese biscuit recipe, with flaky cream cheese pastry swirled around copious quantities of grated Cheddar. This type of pastry is much better than puff and not nearly as greasy.

Savoury oat and seed bars

I’m adding bars to the collection, savoury, healthy and delicious. They are high protein, high fibre snacks, like a flapjack or granola bar in a savoury version. Very easy and super versatile: try baking a batch for healthy, filling and guilt-free treats.

Pretzels

And finally, pretzels, because what’s better to go with a stein of beer? Homemade German pretzels sprinkled with salt crystals, soft and chewy inside and brown glossy outside thanks to a dip in lye or baking soda solution before baking.
